Why study Bachelor of Public Health?

Monash Nursing graduates are sought after worldwide due to the quality of evidence-based teaching and clinical practice experience they receive. The Bachelor of Nursing provides students with the knowledge and clinical skills to provide high-quality nursing care.

You will also have the scope to provide care in multiple settings, including acute care, primary health care, mental health and health promotion. Monash Nursing will prepare you for increasingly complex health care situations in Australia and internationally.

You will gain invaluable skills in clinical decision-making, client care, communication, cultural competence and research, developed through extensive clinical experience in a variety of settings.

The Bachelor of Public Health is a multidisciplinary, flexible degree that provides students with the opportunity to learn key principles in public health, and health programmes and policy leading to a wide range of careers. It also provides a pathway to postgraduate (pre-med) clinical programmes (for example medicine, social work, nursing and allied health) as well as to honours and postgraduate studies in public health.

International cross-campus collaborations, placements and internships expose you to a variety of international staff, students and stakeholders, and mean you gain a global perspective on public health. We also take advantage of local opportunities for collaboration between Monash South Africa and partners within the South African community.

In your first year, you’ll investigate the biological bases of health and disease, health and social care systems and global health. Fieldwork in your third year provides a broad exposure to the public health sciences that underpin an understanding of health and illness in both individuals and populations.

This programme is offered by Monash South Africa in cooperation with Monash University. Successful completion of this programme leads to a Monash South Africa qualification.

Career opportunities

Job market growth in the health, local government, and workplace and education sectors continues unabated. There is a strong demand for multi-skilled programme managers and for prevention promotion workers, particularly to work with vulnerable groups and ageing populations. Government directions for health programmes in most African countries are now geared for jobs in community settings rather than hospitals, to deal with rising rates of chronic conditions and disease, as the shift from hospital to community based programmes continues. Government and non-government organisations are constantly in need of health policy analysts and policy makers especially as health, social and other policy sectors are expected to develop partnerships and cross-sector partnerships and policies (i.e. transport and health, environments and health).
