About African Scholars Fund

The African Scholars Fund is a non-profit organization founded in 1970. ASF helps young school children with potential from disadvantaged backgrounds complete their secondary or TVET college education. The organization mainly depends on private donations. Since its foundation, ASF has received around 28 million funds which supported more than 50000 high school youths and 2500 TVET students.

NYDA-African Scholars Fund Bursaries

In partnership with NYDA and the African Scholars Fund, financial support will be granted to applicants who have academic potential and sense of responsibility. The bursary will be given to high school candidates as well as public TVET college applicants.

High School bursary is valued at R1000 per year and will be paid through the school. The bursary holders’ performance will be monitored and evaluated every mid-year and December. The areas of operation for high school education are the Free State, Western, Eastern and Northern Cape.



The Public TVET College bursary will support students who are enrolled for Business and Engineering studies at Public TVET Colleges. The areas of operation for this bursary are the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape. Bursaries are offered for full-time courses only at FET colleges: N1 – N6 and some Practical courses. Bursary for TVET colleges will only cover course fees and registration.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

High School

  • 50% or above average mark for all subjects
  • Maximum R4500 school fees per year
  • Maximum R7500 total monthly household income
  • Residing or studyng within the Free State, Western, Eastern or Northern Cape
  • 21 years old and below in matric year

Public TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) College

  • 50% or above average mark for all subjects
  • 25 years old and below when applying
  • NOT a recipient of any other bursaries
  • Minimum of grade 10 with Maths and Science is required for technical courses
  • Minimum of 50% in all tests and exams and 60% for Orientation courses are required, if applicant is already in college

How to Apply and Application Details

  1. Download and complete the appropriate application form:

    • High School:
      • June academic report
      • Household proof of income
      • Letter in own handwriting indicating all your relevant background as well as your family
      • Empty and unsealed self-addressed envelope with stamp
    • TVET:
      • Certified copy of most recent high school certificate or report
      • Copies of all previous college exam statement of results, if applicable
      • Printout of current CLASS TEST results for applicants already in college
      • Household proof of income
      • Empty and unsealed self-addressed envelope with stamp
      • Letter in own handwriting indicating application motivation and family situation
  3. Send your applications through post at PO Box 294, Rondebosch 7700. Emailed or faxed applications will be rejected.

Closing Date

  •  15 September for High School 
  •  31 October for 1st trimester/semester 
  •  31 March for 2nd trimester 
  •  31 May for 2nd semester 
  •  31 July for 3rd trimester
