Overview of SAAFoST Bursary Program

bursary is a monetary award made by any educational institution or funding authority to individuals or groups. It is usually awarded to enable a student to attend school, university, or college when they might not be able to, otherwise. Some awards are aimed at encouraging specific groups or individuals into the study.

SAAFoST or the South African Association for Food Science and Technology is a non-profit national organization dedicated to the development of food science and technology by publication of a membership magazine, Food Science and Technology, scientific research, hosting events as well as educational activities related to food technology. Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern branches attend to these events and activities of the association.

SAAFoST Bursary Application Details 2021-2022

SAAFoST Foundation is inviting all interested and qualified students to apply for bursaries in the field of Food Science and Technology. The SAAFoST Foundation bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, employment equity and demonstrated potential.

The bursary programme will cover the actual tuition fees from the tertiary institution according to the statement of account in the name of the bursary holder to a maximum of R35 000.00 per year. The payment will be given directly to the tertiary institution every semester depending on the bursary holder’s academic results in the first semester.

SAAFoST bursary programme is offered for Matriculants, Undergraduates, and Part-Time Bursary for SAAFoST Members.



Bursary Conditions:

  • Bursary holders are required to sign a contract as an agreement to the bursary terms and conditions
  • SAAFoST Foundation makes the final decision regarding bursary granting and reserves the right not to award a bursary.
  • Bursary holders are required to provide six-monthly academic progress reports to the SAAFoST Foundation which should include participation in SAAFoST activities.
  • The bursary will be converted into a loan repayable in equal installments for the following reasons:
    • Interruption of studies which includes changing courses
    • Failure to complete the studies within the required period
    • Failure of any year or semester of study
  • Failure to comply with the conditions and requirements of the bursary programme will result to suspension of the funding for the following year. Should the recipient comply with the conditions and requirements in the subsequent year, including carried over courses from the previous year, SAAFoST Foundation will refund to the recipient all the suspended tuition fees and the funding shall continue. However, no repeated courses, subjects or modules shall be paid for by the SAAFoST Foundation.
  • For Matriculants: Registration for SAAFoST membership is required within the first three months of registration at the tertiary institution. Students must remain active members of SAAFoST for the duration of the study.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

General Qualifications:

  • South African citizens who are permanent residents of South Africa for at least 3 years prior to application
  • Applicants who excel academically will be given preference

Matriculants Bursary:

  • Enrolled students for full time undergraduate study for a first degree or diploma in the field of Food Science and Technology at an accredited South African Tertiary Institution
  • Prescribed period of relevant study programmes:
    • Undergraduate Degree (up to BSc Hons) – 4 years
    • B. Tech Degree – 5 years
    • Diploma – 4 years
  • Achievement Rating of 5 or 60-69% in Mathematics and Physical Science

Journalism Students Bursary:

  • B.Sc or B.Tech degree in Food Science and/or Technology
  • Enrolled students for full time or part-time post-graduate study for a journalism course of their choice at an accredited South African Tertiary Institution or Training Institute. Complete of the study programme should be within 1 year.
  • Traditional and non-traditional (correspondence, on-line or attendance of lectures) education are both accepted
  • Display of genuine commitment and potential to be a successful journalist in the field of Food Science.
  • Must be Professional Members of SAAFoST and remain active for the duration of the study.

Undergraduate Bursary:

  • Full-time students for first undergraduate degree or diploma in the field of Food Science and Technology at a South African Tertiary Institution for a period of 3-4 years
  • Member of SAAFoST for at least 12 months preceding the application

SAAFoST Members Bursary:

  • Part-time BSc Hon or B-Tech in the field of Food Science and Technology at a South African Tertiary Institution for a maximum period of two years
  • Member of SAAFoST for at least 12 months preceding the application

Download and complete the relevant bursary application form:

Accompany your application form with certified copies of the following:

    • A head & shoulders passport size photo
    • ID book or RSA passport
    • For matriculants, Grade 11 final examinations and last Grade 12 examinations (Part B and C) (including FETC (G) [Further Education & Training Certificate (General)], or recognised equivalent, with an achievement rating of at least 5 in both Mathematics and Physical Science or Life Science, if available)
    • For Undergraduates, most recent academic results
    • For Part-time BSc Hon or B-Tech students, most recent academic results and a copy of BSc or Nat Dip.
    • Personal Statement (Part D) of not more than 1 A4 page describing how their food science and technology education and training will contribute in their lives and in the scientific community
    • Reference Letter (Part D) written by someone who has known the applicant in an academic ability for at least 3 years
    • For matriculants, National Benchmarking Test/ Potential Test results from the relevant Tertiary institution
    • Proof or registration for a tertiary institution for the next academic year
