Ukwazi School of Nursing (Pty) Ltd

Ukwazi School of Nursing (Pty) Ltd

Ukwazi School of Nursing (Pty) Ltd is a nursing education institution accredited by the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL in terms of the Nursing Act, 2005.

Our main campus is in Roodepoort, Gauteng, South Africa and we also have a sub-campus in Potchefstroom, North West Province, South Africa.

Nursing education in South Africa is in a flux of change as the old (legacy) nursing qualifications are being phased out and new qualifications are being phased in.

The phasing in of the new nursing qualifications is a lengthy and involved process that will require patience from prospective learners wishing to enrol for any of the new qualifications.  No nursing education institution in South Africa has as yet been registered and accredited to offer any of the new qualifications.

UKWAZI SCHOOL OF NURSING is however in the forefront of the registration and accreditation process.  We have received accreditation from the COUNCIL ON HIGHER EDUCATION for

·          The Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing, and

·          The Diploma in Nursing: Staff Nurse.

The DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING and the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL must still finalise their registration and accreditation processes and prospective students will be informed on this website and in the social and other media as soon as these processes have been finalised as far as the SCHOOL is concerned.

However, prospective students are advised to ensure that they will meet the admission criteria for these qualifications once we commence accepting applications for admission.  All prospective students will have to be in possession of a NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE with endorsement (higher certificate or diploma) with LIFE SCIENCES as a subject AND

·       a mark of 50 – 59% (level 4) in LIFE SCIENCES for the Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing, or

·       a mark of 60 – 69% (level 5) in LIFE SCIENCES for the Diploma in Nursing: Staff Nurse.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE LIFE SCIENCES AS A SUBJECT OR IF YOUR MARK IS TOO LOW, YOU WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

HOWEVER, IF YOU DO OUR HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT COURSE WHICH PLACES PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION WITHOUT LIFE SCIENCES AS A SUBJECT.  This course is facilitated by our sister company UKWAZI SKILLS CAMPUS PTY LTD (www.ukwaziskillscampus.co.za) and is accredited by the HEALTH & WELFARE SECTOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING AUTHORITY.  The course also creates employment opportunities in frail care centres, step-down (recuperation) facilities, hospices, etc.  An Information Brochure is obtainable from them.

QUALIFICATIONS

The old (legacy) auxiliary nurse and enrolled nurse qualifications are being phased out by the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL.

The following new nursing qualifications will be phased in

  • HIGHER CERTIFICATE in AUXILIARY NURSING which will lead to registration with the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL as an AUXILIARY NURSE and which is a 1 year programme;
  • DIPLOMA IN NURSING: STAFF NURSE which will lead to registration with the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL as a STAFF NURSE and which is a 3 year programme.

UKWAZI SCHOOL OF NURSING has been accredited by the COUNCIL ON HIGHER EDUCATION for the new qualifications. The DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING and the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL must however still complete their processes.  We are doing our utmost to get these in place as early as possible.

Our sister company (UKWAZI SKILLS CAMPUS PTY LTD) offers a programme for the training of health care assistants which is accredited by the HEALTH & WELFARE SETA (it is not regulated by the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL).  This programme will aid prospective nursing students who  do not have LIFE SCIENCES as a subject on your National Senior Certificate in their applications for admission to the new nursing qualifications.  The course will still equip students with the required skills and competencies to find employment in the health care industry.

HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION:  APPLICATION FORM

The School will commence taking applications for admission once it is registered and accredited to offer the new nursing qualifications.  An Information Brochure which explains the dates of all intakes; fees payable; course content; etc will be available from our offices at that juncture and will be available by fax; email; postal mail or personal collection.  You are invited to contact your campus of choice – Roodepoort or Potchefstroom (see tabs at the top of this page) for further information in this regard.
