NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND CIVIL ENGINEERING N4-N6

Introduction

Advanced engineering programmes are offered in a Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering Field. Artisans and apprentices, who wish to improve their technical qualifications, can advance to the N Diploma for which 12 credits must be achieved on the N4 to N6 levels. Proof of applicable practical experienced is also required.

National N Diploma

Candidates must comply with the following minimum requirements in order to obtain a National N Diploma:

  • A N6 Certificate in either Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering with a minimum of twelve(12) advanced instructional offerings with at least a pass in three (3) instructional offerings in each of the grades N4, N5 and N6.
  • Documentary proof of at least two years applicable experience in business and industry. This should facilitate the practical implementation of any two (2) of the N6 subjects relevant to the candidate’s vocational training.
  • A National N Diploma is evaluated as a three (3) year tertiary qualification

Duration of the Programmes

These programmes are offered on a full-time block release basis of 11 weeks.After successfully completing an N Level, a student may continue during the following trimester with the next level. In this way it is possible for a successful student to obtain three N certificates in one year.

Admission Requirements

A candidate must be in possession of a N3 or a Grade 12 (Technical) certificate with a pass in at least three applicable subjects in order to be admitted to the programme.

Examinations

National examinations take place three times a year.

  • Candidates require a term mark that will be combined with the examination mark in order to pass.
  • The pass mark is minimum 40% per subject.

DURATION OF PROGRAMMES

A National N Certificate may be obtained after completing two semesters of successful part-time study per year. The N6 Certificate is evaluated by the HSRC as equivalent to a Senior Certificate + 2 years qualification.

  • After the completion of N6, the student has to go for in-service training in an industry related to the study for a period of two years in order to qualify for a diploma in an engineering field of specialization.

  • Part-time registration requires FULL PAYMENT OF FEES AT REGISTRATION.
