The following persons are the Directors of the Company:
• Prof. dr. GDS Smit (Vice-Chancellor and Principal)

• Prof. dr. CA Swanepoel (Dean: Faculty of Arts)

Our History

From 1988 to 1999 this institution was still known as the “Theological School”. However, a new Education Act in 1997 required that all private tertiary institutions be officially registered with the education department before 1 January 2000. The application from the Theological School has succeeded, and we have the wonderful privilege of being awarded the degrees BA (a qualification in the humanities) and BTh (a qualification in theology). (Previously, only diplomas could be awarded.) From registration in 1999, the Theological School would officially be known as “The Afrikaans Protestant Academy”. The AP Academy now functions under the management of the Council of the Academy and has no prerequisites to students about church membership, race or culture. Anyone wishing to study in Afrikaans on a Christian basis is most welcome to the APA. The APA is a registered private academy in tertiary education that strives for the ideal of a free Christian university in Afrikaans.

From the founding of the Theological School FAH van Staden served as rector. In 2008 he retired and became prof. dr. JAE Adendorff was elected rector from 1 January 2009. With the extension of the AP Academy, the Council realized the importance of a permanent registrar and in 2009 Prof. dr. SD Nel named as the first full-time Registrar of the APA. Since then, the APA has expanded to include lecturers in all programs and subjects offered by the APA. In particular, we have expanded our staff in the last year in education, IT support, curriculum development and assessment. In 2017, the Graduate Advanced Certificate in Education (PGCE) was accredited.

At the end of 2018, prof. dr. GDS Smit (who at that time was Dean of the Faculty of Theology) was appointed by the APA Council as the new rector with effect from 1 January 2019.

Those who look back years later are stunned by what the APA has achieved in the field of higher education and in particular theological education: Who cannot but stand in astonishment at the greatness of God? We pray to the Lord all our professors, lecturers, students and staff of the AP Academy. May the Lord give wisdom that the cradle being weighed is always a cradle that carries the glory of God first.
