UFS Masters In Environmental Management Admission Requirements

Admission requirements

The Centre for Environmental Management can only accommodate 30 students per year in the Master of Environmental Management programme. Due to the high number of applicants, only the best students are selected for the programme.

Students are therefore selected through a competitive process by a panel of academic staff from the Centre for Environmental Management.

Minimum requirements

The minimum requirements to be considered by the selection panel are:

  • A recognised qualification relevant to environmental management with 120 credits at NQF level 8 (typically a BScHons qualification or equivalent).
  • Experience in environmental science or management
  • Fixed employment within the environmental sector.

In addition to these minimum requirements, applicants will be evaluated based on their academic transcripts and the written essays, which form part of the application process.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Applicants who only have a formal qualification at NQF level 7 (typically a 3-year bachelor’s or BTech degree), but who have extensive work experience in the environmental sector, may be recommended to enter into the RPL process. This process is handled by the University of the Free State RPL Office and involves compiling a portfolio of relevant work experience.

Potential RPL candidates should apply for the Master of Environmental Management ,using the standard application process. Suitable candidates will be recommended by the selection panel to enter the RPL process after provisional acceptance.

Applicants should not enter the RPL process unless they have specifically been recommended by the selection panel.
