ENTRANT STUDENTS
If you wish to apply for financial aid for 2018, you need to make an online application for NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) funding on their website – www.nsfas.org.za – as universities no longer issue NSFAS financial aid applications. If you are unable to access the internet, you may call the NSFAS Call Centre (Telephone Number 086 006 7327) for assistance of how to apply manually. If you wish to contact NSFAS by email their address is [email protected]
The NSFAS Call Centre (086 006 7327) is also able to assist you through the application process or clarify any funding queries that you may have. The NSFAS application process for 2018 opens on 1 August 2017 and closes on 30 November 2017. Late applications will not be considered. Before commencing the online application process, please remember to scan a copy of your SA identity document as you will need to attach it to your application. The online system will also advise you of any other supporting documents that you may need to attach. NSFAS will advise you of the status of your application once they have received it. Please note that NSFAS can only make final funding decisions after they have received your Grade 12 Final Examination results.

RETURNING STUDENTS
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications for 2019opens on the 1st August 2017.
Students who wish to apply for financial aid for 2019need to make an online application for funding by logging onto the NSFAS website – www.nsfas.org.za
In view of the above, Student Funding has not printed any financial aid applications for 2018.
Students who have received NSFAS loans in 2017 will be automatically migrated to the NSFAS 2019application process and DO NOT need to submit financial aid applications again for 2018.
The following categories of students ARE required to complete the NSFAS application process if they wish to be considered for NSFAS loans in 2018:
- All first time applicants for NSFAS funding
- All students who received bursaries in 2017
- All students who were not NSFAS loan recipients in 2017
- Students who received “Allowances Only” assistance in 2017.
Before commencing your NSFAS on line funding application on the NSFAS website – www.nsfas.org.za – you must scan a copy of your ID document as you will need to upload it as an attachment. NSFAS will advise students of any additional supporting documents that need to be attached with the application.

NSFAS Financial Aid Applications open 01 August 2017 and close 30 November 2017. Students are advised to apply early and not wait until November as no late applications will be accepted by NSFAS.
HOW TO APPLY?
The guidelines relating to entrants and returning students who wish to apply for financial aid are explained above. Applications for financial aid must be done on the NSFAS website – www.nsfas.org.za and NSFAS will respond to applicants in January before registration.
Depending on your family income, and on your academic progress, UKZN may award you a bursary or a scholarship. There is never sufficient funding for all applicants and all applicants are financially screened and listed in academic priority.
Follow the instructions exactly with regard to information required, documents requested, and deadline dates.
Note that we try to give opportunities to as many people as possible so we do NOT offer funding if you already have a degree at the level at which you intend to study or if you already have a post-graduate vocational qualification, or if you are registering part-time or for a “self-funding course”.

WHAT YOU MAY BE AWARDED
IF YOU ARE FROM A REALLY NEEDY FAMILY WITHOUT OTHER FORMS OF FINANCIAL AID AND YOU HAVE REALLY GOOD RESULTS YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE AWARDED FINANCIAL AID.
If your results are mediocre or poor you are UNLIKELY to receive financial aid from the university.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO APPLY FOR A UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP. Whether you are an entrant or an undergraduate, the Scholarships Committee will compare all students with excellent results, and will tell you whether you have been awarded one of the many scholarships. If you are an entrant you may also be awarded a merit award based on achieving excellent results in the Senior Certificate Examination. See under Scholarships for details.
