The 9th of October saw the 7th ANNUAL Varsity College Schools Quiz powered by Algoa FM in Port Elizabeth. The Schools Quiz, held at Victoria Park High School, saw 32 teams representing 18 schools from Port Elizabeth and surrounds. The Quiz was held over three rounds each consisting of seven categories including current affairs, sport, entertainment, history, geography and the environment, arts and literature and general knowledge. The event has become a fiercely competitive annual event in the Port Elizabeth schools calendar and has even inspired, by the format the start of a new schools league.

The winning team this year was Victoria Park High School. The 2012 winners retained the trophy and now house the schools quiz trophy and will be known as the champions of 2013. With each team member walking away with an R 1,000.00 cash prize, a bursary from Varsity College as well as an R 120, 000 bursary fund to be given to a grade 12 learner at the school’s discretion. Second place went to Theodor Herzl and the Victoria Park 2nd team took third spot.

This year was the third year that saw a collaboration between Varsity College and Algoa FM. Part of the collaboration was that in the lead up to the quiz 4 schools were selected to go up against the DMB (Daron Mann Breakfast Show) live on air in studio. The quiz master both on air and at the actual event was Daron Mann.

POPULAR QUIZ ENGAGES LEARNERS

The Schools Quiz, an annual event for high school pupils, is sponsored by Varsity College and hosted by its eight campuses nationwide. The Port Elizabeth campus will be hosting its Quiz at the Victoria Park High School on 21 August at 18h30.



This year will be the fourth year with the collaboration between Varsity College and Algoa FM. Part of this collaboration included a lead up to the quiz where 5 schools were selected to go up against the Daron Mann Breakfast Show (DMB) live on air in studio. This year Victoria Park High School, Collegiate Girls High School, St Dominics Priory, Grey High School and Westering High School all got the opportunity to compete against Charlton from the DMB show and to meet the quiz master both on air and for the actual event – Daron Mann.

The Quiz involves three rounds, each consisting of seven categories including current affairs, sport, entertainment, history, geography and the environment, arts and literature and general knowledge. The objective of the Schools Quiz is to engage learners in a different way on becoming more aware of what is happening in the world around them and to see the impact this can have on their lives.

Danielle Campbell, Vice Principal of Marketing says: “Each member in the winning team will be walking away with a R1000.00 cash prize and a bursary from Varsity College. One grade 12 learner at the discretion of the winning school will also receive a full three year tuition bursary fund”.
